PARKS

It is vital that public open spaces including urban rivers, greenbelts and parks are managed and that fauna and flora are conserved. Urban parks are an important part of the suburban ecosystem and provide desperately needed habitat for birds, reptiles, small game and insects and provide the necessary space for suburban residents to exercise, experience nature and get outdoors.

Crime levels and levels of personal safety both within these spaces and in adjacent suburbs are directly  affected by the state of open spaces. In neighboring suburbs, property values, overall quality of life and the standard of the whole suburb are all directly and indirectly affected by the standard of the parks and public open spaces within and close to that suburb. In order to effectively manage any suburb, it is critical that the parks be rehabilitated, maintained constantly improved.

Once illegal settlements develop in parks and open spaces, it becomes exceedingly difficult and costly to try to rehabilitate such a park, and the neighboring suburbs suffer from an increase in crime, a decrease in quality of life, a decrease in property values and eventually the collapse of the standard and character of the area.

Parks are also a prime taget for land invasions and there is always a real risk of an entire park being taken over in one single influx of people and building materials. Visible park patrols and ongoing management of the parks are critical elements in preventing such an event, as an unmanaged park is more attractive to land invaders than a well managed park.
